Candles in the Sun; the Making of a Messiah
An Original Play in 2 Acts by Elizabeth Spring elizabethspring@aol.com 401-294-5863 WGA #R20609 NARRATOR: "They said that the boy—who was to become the next Messiah had been found. Or as they put it-- the body, or vehicle for the Soul--of the One who would be groomed to fulfill the role of the Second Coming of Christ-- had been found in India in 1909 while the boy was playing down by the river with his brother. And so I was found, when I was 14 years old…down by the river. I had lice in my hair and was scrawny and undernourished. My mother had just died, and I ached for her so much that I had almost no energy to talk. In school they thought I was a day-dreamer who would amount to nothing. That is, until the day I was found by Charles Leadbeater, who saw in me something else. He changed the course of my life. He proclaimed to the world, that I was “the One” and he convinced one of the most powerful woman in Europe at the time, Annie Besant, to adopt me. She took me out of India and brought me to England to be raised and groomed for my new Role. Annie Besant believed in me, and she and Charles convinced thousands of earnest spiritual seekers to believe in me as well. I was the ‘talk of the town’, especially among a certain educated elite in England and America; those people who called themselves Theosophists. Charles and Annie were prominent members of this liberal group of seekers who claimed to have esoteric ‘access’ to all the spiritual masters who had come before—including Christ. Their leader, the Russian spiritualist Madame Blavatsky, had proclaimed in her book, “The Secret Doctrine” that a New Age had begun and that a great spiritual teacher—a Messiah-- for the New Age would soon be discovered. And so they found me. They said that the prophecy was manifesting as predicted—although I never really talked much—that is, not until that one day in 1929 not long after my 33rd birthday, when I finally found my true voice. Once I started talking I never really stopped, and today you can find my books in almost any bookstore in your country. This is my story. I did indeed become a world spiritual leader as they prophesied, but my message was not what they wanted to hear. This is a story about the connection between freedom and the seeking of truth. My hope is that you will recognize some elements of your story in mine.My name is J.Krishnamurti." |

Author's disclaimer: Although this biographical play is based on the lives of historical people, and although I have spent over seven years researching it, it is still necessary to take "dramatic liberties" to frame it into theatrical form. Just as was done in the screenplay "Gandhi" much biographical content has been omitted in order to contain and portray the life story and message of Krishnamurti. Because his life has been surrounded by controversy, the biographical sources used will not be approved by everyone. My intent has been to hold true to both the content, message, and facts of his life as accurately as possible. |

| Elizabeth Spring, MA, has written 3 screenplays and one dramatic play. The first screenplay, "Reason to Believe" was also based on the life of Krishnamurti and won two first place awards—one at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and one from the Santa Barbara Screenwriters Guild. Elizabeth has lectured at the Krotona School of Theosophy in Ojai, California, speaking on the different spiritual approaches embodied by the early Theosophists such as Annie Besant, and the unique metaphysical approach of Krishnamurti. While living in Ojai for many years Elizabeth was able to discuss K’s life with members of the Theosophical Society, and close ties to Krishnamurti such as Rosalind Rajagopal, David Bohm, Beatrice Wood as well as many others who knew him well, such as K’s gardener and cook. Elizabeth is a psychotherapist and astrologer, as well as a writer, and feels a special affinity with Annie Besant. They were both born on Oct. 1st--Annie at 5:34 PM in 1847 and Elizabeth at 5:37 PM in 1947. One hundred years and three minutes apart, their astrological charts have striking similarities. Elizabeth was told by a psychic that she and Annie would be collaborating on a writing project together, and upon hearing that, Elizabeth and her husband left Rhode Island and moved to Ojai, Ca. so that Elizabeth could spend time researching and writing at the Theosophical and Krishnamurti Institutes there. This play is a result of that effort that started almost 20 years ago. Both Annie and Elizabeth are ¾ Irish, and have both been known to speak with great passion on many occasions. http://www.elizabethspring.com | |
