Krishnamurti:  Also known as Krishnaji or "K", he was the young Hindu boy who was being raised to become the new Messiah. In the beginning of the play he is very shy and thin with long dark hair and an almost vacant expression in his eyes. In the second act he has matured into a strikingly handsome young man, in his late twenties-early thirties, who has deep set eyes framed by long lashes, prominent cheekbones, and a self-confident manner.

Nitya: Krishnamurti's younger brother whom he deeply loved. He was sickly, and it was foretold that he would not die. His death was one of the turning points of K's life as it accelerated his own breakdown and subsequent enlightenment.

Rose:A lovely young woman who was part of the Theosophical Society. She and Krishnaji were attracted to each other, and she plays a small but significant role in helping him discern truth from falsehood.

Joseph Campbell: Young scholar and philosopher who Krishnaji meets on the ship and who challenges Krishnaji's ideas about the unimportance of dreams. The discussion proved to be very important,in terms of the play, and in history, they remained friends for life.

"Girl": a teen-age girl at the final convention scene who tries to sell Krishnaji "candles in the sun." She embodies the view of most of the people in the final scene at the climax of the play.
